- 10:15 a.m. — School board says it hasn't determined whether it will send students home
Crews have put out a fire on the second floor of Elizabeth Bagshaw Elementary School in east Hamilton.
Just after 9:30 a.m., firefighters responded to an alarm at the school, located on Albright Road just west of the Red Hill Valley Parkway.
Hamilton Fire Department spokesman Claudio Mostacci said the fire started on the second floor of the building but has since been extinguished.
There were no injuries in the fire, said Ian Wright, a commander with the Hamilton Paramedic Service.
He said firefighters are still dealing with "heavy smoke conditions."
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) said students have been evacuated to the neighbouring Red Hill Learning Centre.
HWDSB spokeswoman Jackie Penman said the fire started in an "unoccupied classroom."
At around 10:30 a.m., she said the board hadn't determined whether the children will return to the school on Tuesday or will be sent home.
"At this point, we're waiting for word from the fire department to see what the next steps are."
