A Hamilton police officer was bitten when trying to disarm a man with a knife on Barton Street Friday evening, police say.

It happened around 10:10 p.m. that night. A man pulled out a knife when officers tried "to speak with him," police say.

The officers tried to disarm him, but one was bitten before they could get him to let go of the knife, police say. Both officers ended up with hand injuries, but neither was cut by the knife.

A 20-year-old man was charged with assaulting a police officer, assault and carrying a dangerous weapon.
