Hamilton police have charged a second man in connection with the attempted armed robbery at a jewelry store in Eastgate Square in January, they announced Tuesday.
That suspect was arrested on unrelated charges five days after the attempted robbery. The other man was previously charged after the incident as employees of the store subdued him until police arrived. The attempted robbery shook the family-owned business and shoppers at the mall, which was locked down while the incident was happening.
Police have charged Nicholas Mihajlovic, 25, and Jonathan Mihajlovic, 28, each with four counts of robbery with a firearm, four counts of discharging a firearm endangering life, four counts of discharging a firearm preventing arrest, disguise with intent and possession of an unauthorized firearm.
Two men wearing construction vests and balaclavas went to Fine Touch Jewelers in the east-end mall around closing time intending to rob the store, said Hamilton Police spokesman Cst. Steve Welton.

One of the suspects showed a handgun and began making demands of a clerk, while the other suspect wielding a hammer went behind the counter and began to take merchandise.
Three employees in the store heard the commotion and came to help the clerk, police say. Two of them confronted the suspect who had jumped the counter and kept him down, and the third employee began throwing objects at the man who had the gun.
Employees held the suspect who had jumped the counter. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries from the struggle. But the man who had the handgun intentionally shot the gun "multiple times inside the store" in the area of the struggle, police say.
That suspect was seen getting into a black GMC Sierra pickup truck to escape. That truck has been seized and searched, said Staff Sgt. Emidio Evangelista. A firearm has also been recovered using search warrants, but police don't know yet if it's the same firearm used in the attempted robbery.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 905-546-2991 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
