Sahab Jamshidi, an Ancaster, Ont., will be in a St. Lucia court Tuesday, facing a charge of causing death by gross negligence in the death of a four-year-old local boy.
Jamshidi, 33, is a fitness instructor who is believed to have trained to be a doctor abroad and is awaiting residency in Canada, was in the Caribbean island at Bois Shadon Beach, in the town of Vieux Fort on holiday.
Police said it was there where he took a boy from the town, Terrel Joshua Elibos, out kite surfing. Police say the boy fell into the water and drowned around 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22. Police searched for the boy until his body was found at nearby Coconut Bay Beach early last Tuesday morning.
Jamshidi was held without charges throughout the weekend, and was formally charged with causing death by gross negligence or recklessness Monday afternoon. The maximum penalty under St. Lucia law is life in prison.
Senior Cons. Zachary Hippolyte, press officer with the Royal St. Lucia Police, said there is a "strong" likelihood of bail for Jamshidi.
He is not listed with the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, but a previous report in the Guelph Mercury describes a person with the same name and age who was a trained doctor in the U.S. and awaiting medical residency in Canada.
In that story, Jamshidi aided a distressed Guelph man while biking on Hamilton trails.
