A passerby called 9-1-1 and reported the fire. Upon arriving crews found heavy fire and smoke coming from the first and second floors of the three-storey building, Hamilton Fire spokesman Claudio Mostacci said.
The house was vacant and no one was there, he added.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been asked to investigate.
Mostacci said the building appeared to be set up for apartments. A city of Hamilton document mentions plans for $100,000 construction alteration in 2014.
Twitter user Mike/@va3fs, who lives two doors down, posted a photo of the fire crews on the scene and said the house was under construction. The owner was devastated, he said.
