A significant winter storm is expected to cross southern Ontario this weekend, according to Environment Canada's forecast.
The weather agency issued a special weather statement for Hamilton and the rest of the region Friday morning, forecasting snow, rain and a chance of freezing rain, resulting in difficult travel conditions.
The special weather statement is prompted by a developing low pressure system that's tracking southwest to northeast across southern Ontario over the weekend. Snow is expected to begin Saturday before changing to rain later Saturday or Sunday. Some freezing rain is also possible during the transition.
"Temperatures are expected to be well above freezing Sunday, reaching double digits for some areas," Environment Canada said. "The warmth will be short lived, however. A cold front sweeping across Southern Ontario late Sunday will bring a return to cold temperatures, strong winds and flurries."
Due to the changes in weather during the storm, travel will be difficult this weekend, Environment Canada warned.
