Queen Street North row house fire damages 3 homes

A fire burned through the roof of a row house on Queen Street North on Saturday and damaged three homes.

Firefighters were called to the row house at 185-189 Queen St. N., between Barton Street and York Boulevard, shortly before 12:30 p.m. They discovered heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof of the middle unit, according to Claudio Mostacci, spokesman for the Hamilton fire department.

All the residents were out of the building when firefighters arrived, Mostacci said.

The fire started in the attic of the middle unit, but all three units suffered damage, Mostacci said, adding that the cost of the damage is still unclear.

Mostacci said that the building is an older townhouse, which doesn't meet the current standards of fire separation.

"There's no fire stopping between different roofs and attics," he said.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but it is not considered suspicious, he said.

The Red Cross was on site Saturday afternoon. A warming bus has also been brought in.

Residents could be out of their homes "for a while" and will have to seek alternative living arrangements in the meantime, Mostacci said.
