DNA testing has identified the human remains found floating in a flood basin in Stoney Creek in late November as 19-year-old Harmanjit Singh, Hamilton Police said late Friday afternoon.
Police said a post-mortem examination did not reveal a cause of death. Police are continuing forensic examination of the remains.
The body was found in "advanced stages of decomposition," which can make identification very difficult. He disappeared on Oct. 27 after spending time at a friend's home on the east Mountain the night before.
According to a police news release, the marine unit pulled a man's body from a flood basin located in the area of Watercrest Drive and Seabreeze Crescent in Stoney Creek on Nov. 24.
A person walking in the area had seen the body and called police.
Earlier in November, forensic teams from Hamilton Police scoured a home at 37 Hannon Cres. for any clues to Singh's whereabouts.
Hamilton Police Det. Sgt. Joe Stewart said at the time that the investigation into the home was just "one aspect of a multifaceted investigation."
Singh was a recent Mohawk College graduate. Most of his family lives in India. His father and several other family members flew in to help locate Singh, after friends reported him missing.
Family members had viewed the body after an autopsy, but didn't think it was Singh, who went missing in October.
