It's a good weekend to explore the city, find a new favourite local artisan and root for the Bulldogs — and in many parts of town, you'll find free two-hour parking at city meters.
Here are a few events to keep on your radar.
Shop for a locally made gift
Maker's Market: Get your Christmas shopping done at the Holiday Makers' Market, featuring locally made goods. The market takes place on Saturday from 10 to 4 p.m. at Christ's Church Cathedral at 252 James St. N.
Made by Hand Show: These aren't strictly local, but the touring show of made-in-Canada goods comes to the Careport Centre at 270 Longwood Road. Admission for adults is $7. More information on the event's website.
Peek inside a ceramicist's studio
Local ceramicist Emma Smith will host an open house and holiday sale of her own pieces as well as some made by her friends at 2633 Jerseyville Rd W. in Ancaster. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Ride a miniature train
Friday night kicks of the season of free miniature train and carousel rides in Gore Park. The rides happen daily until Dec. 24 with the following hours:
Monday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday: Noon to 7 p.m.
Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Look up, look way up at a 40-foot Christmas tree
The Gore Park Christmas tree is officially lit up, as of 6 p.m. Friday. But there's more party happening — a concert Friday evening and a visit from Santa for free photos Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday will also bring free snacks, carolling and crafts. Kids can drop letters to Santa off in Santa's Mailbox. And downtown businesses will be collecting new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food.
Visit a different neighbourhood
International Village: Visit the International Village, centred on King and Ferguson, for a Victorian "Night in the Village" Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. We've heard Sinterklaas will be visiting the Dutch cafe there, Cafe Oranje, and there will be free horse and carriage rides.
Locke Street: If you don't get your fill of horse and buggy rides, head over to Locke Street on Saturday for special sales, and a chance to visit Santa from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Honour Cirillo and root for the Bulldogs
The Hamilton Bulldogs will be wearing special commemorative jerseys to honour the death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at their game Friday against the Toronto Marlies. More information here.
