A 27-year Hamilton police veteran has been arrested and charged with domestic assault after an off duty incident in Norfolk County, police announced Monday.

The Norfolk County Detachment of the OPP has launched an investigation into the incident police say happened Sunday.

The OPP has charged the officer with assault and breach of a probation order. Representatives from the OPP did not immediately respond to interview requests Monday.

The officer is still in custody and will appear at the Norfolk County Courthouse on Monday.

The officer has been suspended from duty with pay. Ontario is the only province where suspended police officers must be paid.

His name is not being released as it may identify the victim, police say.
