A woman in Dundas, Ont., who was run over by her own van was aided by campaign workers from a local Conservative candidate's office and bystanders who helped lift the vehicle off her.
The woman's injuries are serious but not life-threatening, police said.
The woman was in the plaza at 45 Cootes Dr. in Dundas around 3:30 p.m., where there are offices for a veterinarian, a dog groomer and the campaign for Donna Skelly, a provincial Conservative candidate for the riding of Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale.
Hamilton police are still investigating what happened, but Grant MacLean, a volunteer for Skelly's campaign, said the woman appeared to be getting out of her vehicle when it began moving and trapped her underneath.
The woman, who was in her 70s, was trapped partway under the front wheel, said campaign worker Barbara Lockey of Waterdown. About four people from Skelly's office and the veterinarian's office lifted the bumper of the van and pulled the woman free.
The veterinarian's office workers tucked a towel under the woman's head, while Lockey grabbed a blanket from her car and covered the woman.
There was no hesitation about helping to free the woman, who appeared to be unconscious, Lockey said.
"You don't even think about it. You just do it," she said.
"You help. That's what you do."
Emergency crews arrived "almost immediately," MacLean said.
Hamilton police are investigating the incident, said Staff Sgt. Marty Schulenberg.
"At this point, we believe there may have been some issues in terms of the mechanical safety of the vehicle," he said.
