A date has been set for the funeral of Ian Matthews, the former Hamilton homicide investigator who died after he shot himself inside the Hamilton police's downtown headquarters.
The service is scheduled for Dec. 29 at 2 p.m inside the William J. Markey Chapel at the Bay Gardens Funeral Home (947 Rymal Rd. E) on the Hamilton Mountain.
Matthews's family will be hosting a visitation at the chapel on Dec. 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The shooting incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The former staff sergeant died in hospital roughly nine hours later, at about 10 p.m. that night.
Matthews, 47, was a dedicated 25-year veteran who had led the pioneering BEAR unit, had worked stints in the homicide unit and was described by one person who knew him as one of the department's "all-stars." But that source also noted he had seen "things we can only imagine."
Halton Regional Police have been brought in to conduct a non-criminal investigation into the incident, which Hamilton police are calling a "sudden death."
Matthews's death has led to an outpouring of grief from police officers and non-uniformed members of the Hamilton community.
"This is devastating and I recognize the profound impact this has on our organization," said Hamilton Police Chief Glenn De Caire earlier this week.
"We are supporting Ian's family during this tragic time and our critical incident response team continues to respond to support our members through this tragedy."
People who wish to leave messages of condolences for the family may do so on the Bay Gardens website, at Baygardens.ca/obituary/17622.
