Singer-songwriter Jen Slocumb and her husband Rob are about to play for one of the most important audiences of their lives.
It's not a massive stadium crowd, or a panel of music industry executives. It's a concert for the Bosma family.
Their band, Martha's Trouble, are playing a fundraiser at the Royal Botanical Gardens on August 9, with all proceeds going towards the recently formed Tim's Tribute charity.
They'll be playing their song Prayer for the Broken Heart, which was written for and about the Bosmas. Tim Bosma was from Ancaster, the same place Slocumb grew up. He went missing while on a test drive with two men who had answered an online ad for his truck. His remains were found in May, burned beyond recognition.
The gravity of playing Prayer for the Broken Heart with Tim's wife Sharlene in the audience isn't lost on Slocumb. "To play it for her will be very surreal," she said.
All proceeds from the song since its release in May have been going to the Bosmas. So far, it has raised over $1,000, Slocumb says. "People connect with it just because of the story."
"We wrote the song to show the Bosma's that they have love and support — even from strangers," she said. "We're here for them and so is everyone in the community."
Martha's Trouble will be one of the first groups to formally donate funds to Tim's Tribute. Sharlene Bosma started the charity as a way to support the families of homicide victims.
"The name 'Tim's Tribute' was chosen because a tribute is an act, statement or gift that is intended to show gratitude, respect and admiration," Bosma says.
"All these things we had for Tim."
The charity will begin working in the Hamilton area, but the Bosma family is hoping it will spread much further than that. Bosma says she was driven to start the charity based on an outpouring of goodwill from people all over.
"The community support was astounding and overwhelming," she said. "I'm fully aware that very few people are recipients of such generosity, and I feel compelled to try to change that."
"I have learned that there is very little support for families in our situation."
The Tim Bosma Memorial Concert takes place on August 9 at 7 p.m. at the Royal Botanical Gardens. Tickets are $23-$28, which includes admission to the RBG.
Tickets are available online at Ticketbud.com.
