It's the August long weekend, meaning many Hamiltonians have skipped town to spend time in more bucolic burgs. But there are a host of activities for those who, by choice or by necessity, have remained in the city. Here's a short list of things to do in and around Hamilton on Sunday.

Hamilton Chili and Music Festival and FireFit Competition

The 2013 Hamilton Chili Festival and FireFit competition continues on Sunday at Confederation Park. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., teams of firefighters will be facing off in relay races, competing to see which group can pull off simulated emergency procedures the fastest. The event will also feature live music, running from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. And food trucks will be serving grub between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, go to Firefightersforcharity.com/chilifest.

Harrison Kennedy at Gage Park

Hamilton blues stalwart Harrison Kennedy is playing a free outdoor show on Sunday, the fifth instalment of the Seven Sundays concert series at Gage Park. At 6 p.m., one hour before the four-time Juno nominee hits the stage at the George R. Robinson Bandshell, food trucks will begin selling eats. A showing of the documentary Searching for Sugar Man will follow Kennedy's performance. The film, about Detroit singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez — who found out his records had become immensely popular in South Africa decades after he quit music — starts at 9 p.m.

Magic and Mischief: An Enchanted Garden Weekend

Ever wanted your family to dress up as fairies and gnomes and then prance around in a natural oasis? If so, here's your chance. The Royal Botanical Gardens is hosting its second Magic and Mischief: An Enchanted Garden weekend of the summer. The event, running from Saturday until Monday, features fairy-themed face-painting, storytelling, craft-making and even a barbecue.

The event, taking place at Imagination Grove in the RBG's Hendrie Park, runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m each day. Admission is included with a ticket to the RBG. Prices are as follows: $12.50 for adults; $10.50 for seniors, students and youth; $7.50 for children age five to 12; free for kids under five; $30.50 for a family of four (two adults and two children under 18). Dress as your favourite fairy-themed characted and get 25 per cent off a children's ticket. For more information, go to Rbg.ca/magicandmischief.

Emancipation Day at Griffin House

Griffin House, the city-run museum that commemorates the men and women who escaped slavery to reach southern Ontario via the Underground Railroad, is hosting a picnic to celebrate Emancipation Day. The event honours the British government's 1834 move to abolish slavery across its empire.

Organizers ask visitors to bring their own food. Hand-cranked old-fashioned ice cream will be served after lunch. Speaker Jane Mulkewich will deliver a talk on the life of Sophia Pooley, who had been a slave in Upper Canada, at 2 p.m.

The event, located at 733 Mineral Springs Rd. in Ancaster, is free and runs from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Parking costs $9 and is available at the nearby Hermitage parking lot. Organizers advise guests to wear outdoor walking clothes. For more information, go to Griffin House's website.
