The dog that was shot by police Monday evening after biting a child and lunging at an officer has been quarantined by the city, staff says.
"The dog has undergone some vet treatment and is quarantined at the shelter," said Debbie Spence, a communications officer with the city. "No charges have been filed and this case is currently under investigation."
Police originally reported the dog was a Brazilian Mastiff, but Spence told CBC Hamilton in an email that the dog is a Portuguese fila crossed with a boxer.
"It is important to stress that temperaments of individual dogs can vary greatly," she said. "Portuguese fila breeds are also known as Cão Fila de São Miguel, Azores cattle dog, or Azores cow dog and can be described as a large, aggressive, working dog, which must be well socialized at an early age if it is to be kept as a pet."
"Boxers are typically bright energetic dogs that are good with children and can be used as guard dogs, service & therapy dogs."
The dog chased three boys playing in an alley
The dog was shot by a police officer on Queen Street North Monday evening after biting a child and lunging at an officer.
Three boys were playing in an alley in the area of Queen Street North and Patterson Street around 4:30 p.m. when the dog broke free from its chain and ran at them, police say.
The boys ran, but the dog caught one and attacked him, says police spokesperson Debbie McGreal-Dinning.
"He was located by officers with three significant bites on his body," McGreal-Dinning said. The eight-year-old boy was treated at McMaster Children's Hospital and released, she says.
Just before 5 p.m., police and animal control officers found the dog running loose in an unfenced back yard. "At that time the dog locked eyes with one of our officers and just went for him," McGreal-Dinning said.
The officer shot the dog to protect himself, she says. The dog suffered a minor wound, and was corralled in the backyard until his owner, a 50-year-old Hamilton man, arrived, she said.

- Do not approach a strange dog.
