Townhouse fire causes 300k in damages

Officials are still trying to figure out what caused a fire that erupted in a Hamilton townhouse Saturday evening.

Fire crews were called to 444 Stone Church Rd W. near Garth Street around 9:45 p.m.

When crews arrived they found a garage on fire and "flames extending up into the second and third levels of the townhouse," said fire official Claudio Mostacci.

Mostacci said all occupants of the home had managed to get outside before firefighters arrived. One person needed medical attention that "was not a direct result of smoke or the fire," he added.

"Sometimes the stress of that sort of situation is enough to set a person off," he said.

The damage estimate for the townhouse is around $300,000. The fire is under investigation, but hasn't been deemed suspicious.

"It's just undetermined," Mostacci said. "We really couldn't figure out how it started."

Investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office are set to be on scene Sunday.
