Hamilton's newest celebrity seems unfazed by all the media attention she's getting.
Fashionable in a woolen hat and a zebra print one-piece, she even snoozed through an interview with a CBC Hamilton reporter.
But Evelyn Grace McDonald isn't being rude or blasé. Only hours old, she's clearly unaware that she was the first baby delivered in Hamilton in 2013, having entered the world just one minute after midnight on Jan. 1.
It's an outcome that Jennifer McDonald — despite her contractions — jested about with her husband Kevin as they drove to the hospital on Monday afternoon.
"It was actually kind of an inside joke with us the whole time," said the first-time mother, sitting upright on her bed at the Charlton Campus of St. Joseph's Healthcare.
Up until around 11:45 p.m., the couple wasn't expecting their baby to be the first of the year.
"Then, all of the sudden, she sped things along and made it happen," Jennifer said.
In fact, Evelyn made it happen about two weeks before her due date. And she's small, though healthy and exceptionally calm, weighing in at 5 pounds, 5 ounces.
The couple said they arrived at their daughter's name through a compromise.
"I liked the name Eve and he liked the name Evie," said Jennifer, who works for a small plastics manufacturer in Hamilton. "So I thought of Evelyn so we could both have our nickname for her.
"I didn't want a common name. I wanted something older, not something you hear all the time."
Jennifer and Kevin, who works at Dofasco, married in September 2011.
Residents of the Mountain, they both grew up in Hamilton, where they expect to raise their daughter.
"We'll probably stick around Hamilton, seeing her grow up here. We have roots and family here, so there's not really a reason to move anywhere else."
"We're simple people," added Kevin, who beamed as he cradled his still-sleeping newborn.
Talking about their eventful New Year's, the couple appears both fatigued and utterly joyful.
Appropriately, Jennifer offered the following response when asked if she had any further reflections on her big day:
"Happiness. That's all I can add in."
