Missy Bauman hopeful for Hamilton Music Awards

The first-time nominee is up for two HMA's

Getting to know singer-songwriter Missy Bauman is a risky thing. She'll probably write a song about you.

Bauman, who is up for two Hamilton Music Awards this weekend, likes to write about her first impressions each time she meets somebody new.

"I have songs about almost everyone I know," she laughed. "Really, most of my songs are about people I meet — and it's not a big mystery."

So when the seventeen year old released her first album full of those tunes in August, she approached things with a little trepidation. Especially considering she often writes when someone has ticked her off.

"I was definitely worried," she said. "But hey — it's a few months later, and everyone is still breathing."

This is Bauman's first Hamilton Music Awards nomination. She's up for trophies in two categories: best new artist and female vocalist of the year — where she's up against Hamilton stalwarts like All About Maggie and Terra Lightfoot.

"I feel really lucky," she said. "Though I know what I'm up against so I am a little worried."

It's been a big year for the Brantford-based songwriter. Aside from her self-titled record release, she was also selected to open superstar producer Daniel Lanois' Greenbelt Harvest Picnic back in September.

She was petrified about wearing high heels onstage at the pre-festival press conference — but Lanois himself sauntered over and said "well, you have to wear them now," she laughed.

"When I'm singing I try to only focus on the music — but before and after that set I was totally freaking out."

Bauman currently attends Brantford Collegiate Institute. She's thinking about making a go of music as a career, but isn't too sure about it just yet.

"Because honestly, I'm suffering from a bad case of wanderlust right now."
