Family and activists alike gathered together to remember the late Maggie Hughes in Hamilton on Saturday.
"If there was a right to be wronged as far as social justice issues, she didn't wait for anybody," said fellow activist and friend Amanda Stewart. "She'd just try to right the wrong herself."
Hughes — born Margaret Hewitt — died on Nov. 4 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. She passed away the day before her 61st birthday.
Hughes was honoured at a memorial service at the Truscott, Brown & Dwyer Funeral Chapel across from Gage Park Saturday afternoon.
"I'll take her toughness, her tenacity and her spirit with me always," Stewart said.
Hughes was known in Hamilton as a longstanding advocate for social justice and activism.
She was also a citizen journalist, and produced a weekly radio show on CFMU called The Other Side.
"She showed me the ropes of political agitation," said Kevin Hamilton, who had worked with Hughes at CMFU.
"I never met anybody with such tenaciousness in trying to get a story."
