Rain in Hamilton

Hamilton Conservation Authority warns forecasted rain could bring flooding to "low-lying areas" this week. (Adam Carter/CBC)

Be careful around bodies of water, especially with your kids and pets, in the rain this week, the Hamilton Conservation Authority is warning.

Low-lying areas could see "localized flooding" Wednesday and Thursday and storm sewers could be overwhelmed, the authority said in a statement.

"Forecasted rainfall could result in significant amounts of runoff, which may be exacerbated by the partially frozen soil conditions," the authority said. "This may result in rapidly increasing water levels and flows in area watercourses, with the potential for localized riverine flooding in low-lying areas."

The authority said water levels in Spencer Creek are especially elevated, but across major local waterways the levels are "below critical levels."

Also, the majority of the Hamilton watershed and Cootes Paradise is now free of ice and snow.
