A man wielding a fake gun inside a sock tried to rob a Walmart on Rymal Road East on Tuesday around 8 p.m., but nearby shoppers sprang into action to restrain him.
A 23-year-old man pressed the weapon into the side of a female employee and told her to open the register and give him the money inside, according to a release from Hamilton Police Service. The employee believed the gun to be real.
"He yelled his demands multiple times but she could not get the register open under such stress," police said in a statement.
Then the man moved to another employee and yelled similar demands while pressing the weapon into his back, police say. That employee was "panicking" and also "froze under stress and fear", police said.
"The entire area of the store was frantic and people began to take notice and run in all directions for cover to ensure their safety," police said.
But one customer came from behind the suspect while the second employee struggled to open his register and attempted to restrain the gunman, police said. Other customers took notice and helped, tackling the man and removing the gun from his grasp, police said.
They held him down until police arrived. Police arrested the 23-year-old man on two charges of robbery with a firearm and disguise during the commission of a criminal offence.
"The Hamilton Police Service does not encourage intervening or attempting to stop a robbery in progress," the police statement said. "The citizens in this case however are being commended for their response to a potentially dangerous and volatile situation."
