A two-storey house near Stone Church Road and Upper Wellington St. sustained heavy damage in a fire Sunday evening.

Hamilton Fire Department crews responded to a report of a house fire on Fusilier Drive around 6:22 p.m. Sunday. When crews arrived, the home's occupants were outside and flames were showing from the roof.

The fire was deemed multiple alarm because of the heavy volume of the fire itself and the proximity to neighbouring homes. Crews found a "well-involved fire" in the attic and put out the fire from the inside, according to Hamilton Fire spokesman Claudio Mostacci. No fire spread to the nearby homes.

The home sustained about $200,000 in damage due to the fire, which Hamilton Fire determined was caused by the venting system of a wood-burning fireplace.

Fire and water damage to the home have rendered it uninhabitable and the occupants will be staying with family, Mostacci said.
