Secure outside Christmas decorations: strong winds expected in Hamilton

A couple of holiday classic tunes won't be relevant this Thursday, said CBC meteorologist Shelley James-Skeete.

"'The weather outside is frightful...' Well, actually no," she said. "Hamilton and surrounding areas will have really have to 'dream' for a white Christmas."

The weather will turn "very windy and colder" overnight, according to a special weather statement from Environment Canada. The statement cautions that Hamilton can expect strong winds overnight, with gusts after midnight that could reach 90 km/h.

Also for Christmas Eve, Hamilton can expect "lingering periods of rain" between 2 and 4 millimetres. Temperatures will be around 3 or 4 degrees Celsius. 

"So secure all outside Christmas decorations," James-Skeete said.

The air will warm later Wednesday, Environment Canada said, with "unseasonably mild temperatures" that could be as high as 10 degrees Celsius. 

"These temperatures are more typical of early to mid April, giving a little taste of spring for Santa's trip on Christmas Eve," according to Environment Canada. "An isolated thunderstorm or two is not out of the question, and a Christmas Eve rumble of thunder or two may be in store for a few localities."

By Christmas morning, a "sharp cold front" will drop temperatures to 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. The rain will switch over to flurries, with no accumulated snow expected. Strong winds, 30 to 40 km/h, are expected on Christmas Day, gusting up to 60 or 70 km/h. The winds are expected to abate through the latter part of the day.

The afternoon will be drier, but cloudy, with temperatures around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Christmas night, expect mostly cloudy skies with temperatures around 1 or 2 degrees Celsius.
