Seven fire trucks have knocked out a fire at the Trocadero Tavern Wednesday afternoon, one that started in the front foyer of the restaurant.

Hamilton Fire spokesperson Claudio Mostacci said fire crews had extinguished the main fire at the restaurant, located at Barton Street East and Sanford Avenue, but are now putting out a lingering fire that is between the floorboards, which crews were working to rip apart shortly before 5 p.m.

Mostacci said earlier reports suggesting that there may have been a person trapped inside the second floor apartment above the Trocadero. But that turned out to be false after fire fighters search came up empty.

It was too early to give a dollar estimate or cause of the fire, Mostacci said. But he agreed that it was "odd" that the fire began in the front foyer, away from any tables, or kitchen equipment.
