A tentative collective bargaining agreement between Hamilton steelworkers and U.S. Steel Canada would give workers the same terms as now until 2017.
The stand-pat deal, agreed to by Steelworkers Local 1005 negotiators and U.S. Steel on Tuesday, was discussed by current and retired employees at a union membership meeting at the Royal Canadian Legion on Limeridge Road.
One current steelworker called the deal a "means to an end," while another said the agreement was as good as could be expected given the company's current bankruptcy. Both said they would likely vote to accept the deal next week.
Local 1005 President Rolf Gerstenberger was not available to comment on the tentative agreement on Wednesday.
In an initial news release about the deal, Local 1005 said "no information about the tentative agreement will be provided to the media until it has been provided to the membership."
The union represents some 600 of the 771 active employees at the steel plant, as well as thousands more retired workers.
The last collective bargaining agreement, from 2011, was signed after an 11-month lockout. This tentative agreement was made one day before the previous deal was set to expire.
An emailed statement from U.S. Steel Canada President and General Managers Michael McQuade said the agreement would provide "stability" to the company, but didn't release any details of the deal.
The agreement comes less than a week after an Ontario bankruptcy judge approved U.S. Steel Canada's plan to borrow $185 million from its American parent, U.S. Steel Corp., to get it through a year of restructuring.
The company sought bankruptcy protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) in September.
Members of Local 1005 are set to vote on the deal on Oct. 22.
