The victim of a two-car crash in New Tecumseth, Ont., on Friday afternoon has been identified as 26-year-old Michael Lalonde of Hamilton.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Friday. A fully loaded cement truck and a crossover SUV were both travelling northbound on County Road 10, just south of Third Line, when the cement truck rear-ended the SUV, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

One person was pronounced dead in hospital. Three others, including a child and a pregnant woman, were sent to area hospitals with serious injuries. All four victims were from the SUV.

Two of them remain in serious condition as of Saturday afternoon.

The truck driver was in shock after the crash but was otherwise unharmed, according to police. He was treated and released.

OPP closed County Road 10 at Third Line near New Tecumseth, north of Toronto, for several hours as the investigators examined the fatal collision.

Local politician Jess Prothero witnessed the crash while canvassing the area. He told CBC News the SUV was signalling to turn left when it was hit by the truck. Prothero called 911.

"I started running over to where it was, and as I got closer I could hear the woman yelling that her baby wasn't breathing," he said. "I got the back door open and tried to get the little girl out."

Another man from the area soon arrived and performed CPR.

"He saved her life on site, that's for sure," Prothero said. "It was very sad. It's sad to see a family destroyed in the blink of an eye, and there's no reason for it."

The cause of the crash remains unclear.
