McMaster University's research reactor is scheduled to restart next Tuesday after it was temporarily shut down due to an error on Wednesday.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission granted its approval to start the nuclear reactor — located on the main campus of the university — Friday afternoon, two days after an error during a routine refuelling prompted an unscheduled shutdown.
There was no impact on the public or environment, no injures to workers, and no observed damage to the fuel assembly, the university said in a statement Friday.
A preliminary review showed that the error happened during a routine operation involving the fuel assemblies, which are submerged under 8.2 metres of water within the reactor. One of the assemblies was not in a position connected to the cooling system during the restart, according to the statement.
"The operator realized the error and immediately shut down the reactor and reported the incident," the university said.
The reactor was then restarted and operated normally before it was shut down for the day as scheduled, as the reactor is shut down every night and restarted each morning during normal operations.
However, the university determined it needed approval from the CNSC before restarting the reactor again.
McMaster said it has also begun an internal investigation to find out how the error occurred and how to prevent similar errors from happening again.
The university's reactor — which has been operating since 1959 — is a teaching and research facility, according to the university. It is also used to produce medical isotopes for treating cancer and other illnesses. It does not generate electrical power.
