No public risk from 911 interruption

Acting Police Eric Girt said the public's safety was not at risk when 911 service was briefly interrupted last week.

Girt told the city's police services board the service was never down, despite a warning sent out by police that said it was.

"911 was not technically down. It was shunted to other operators who took those calls," Girt said, adding the interruption was due to scheduled service to the line's power supply.

Girt said there are a number of contingencies for when 911 fails.

"No calls were dropped. Public safety was not at risk," he said.

Councillors Lloyd Ferguson and Terry Whitehead, who brought up the service interruption, were both satisfied with the response.

The meeting was briefly bogged down as Madeleine Levy complained about the board's failure to come up with a media policy – an issue it has been struggling with since 2013.

Levy said she was "disappointed" the governance group chaired by Whitehead had not yet come up with a plan.

Whitehead, who complained Levy was attempting to do committee work at the board level, said he would try to present a media policy early in 2015, though he expressed concerns that it would be difficult to get done while an election is going on.

On the policing side, the board approved a minor change to the way police deal with false alarms. Under the new policy, alarm companies will be fined for false alarms instead of individuals.

Girt said the goal remains to reduce the number of false alarms.

Meanwhile, Ferguson announced Nancy DiGregorio would be leaving the board.

Ferguson and Girt both praised DiGregorio, who was not in attendance on Monday due to a personal matter.

"As I said before, she will be missed," Ferguson said.
