Disgraced Hamilton police officer Derek Mellor is facing more sex-related police act charges, the latest charges in connection with allegations of misconduct more than a decade ago.
The charges related to allegations of a sexual relationship with a woman who was a potential witness in a domestic violence case.
The charges stem from two separate incidents between August, 2000 and November, 2000 – years before the nine police act charges Mellor pleaded guilty to in February this year that included engaging in sexual acts and sending lewd messages as well as photos and videos of his penis to sex workers and colleagues.
According to police act documents released at a hearing Wednesday, it's alleged that between August 27 and November 30, Mellor was sleeping with a woman who was a witness or a potential witness in a domestic violence case he was investigating.
A second charge alleges that in that same timeframe, Mellor went to the same woman's home, and acted in a "disorderly manner."
Mellor, a 14-year veteran of the service, was once the lead of Hamilton Police's anti-human trafficking initiative dubbed "Project Rescue." These new charges happened before he started working with the human trafficking team.
The provincial police Special Investigations Unit has launched an investigation into his conduct.
Mellor didn't speak at Wednesday's police services act hearing, but his lawyer Leo Kinahan said the charges are "very difficult for him."
"It's trying. It's very stressful for him," Kinahan said. "It's very stressful for his family and he's holding up, but it's a difficult time in his life."
As part of an agreed statement of facts for his first round of charges, Mellor admitted to undertaking a sexual relationship with the mother of a woman whose human trafficking case he was working on. He admitted to engaging in sexual activity with her on the side of a rural road, sending her pictures of his penis and a three-second video of him masturbating.
He also pleaded guilty to sending sexual photos and texts to two women who worked with the human trafficking volunteer organization "Walk With Me," and pursuing sexual relationships with two sex workers.
Mellor also pleaded guilty to having sex with a woman who was a sex worker and a potential witness in a human trafficking case.
Mellor's Police Services Act hearing that will decide if he gets to keep his job resumes on Sept. 29. The hearing is expected to resume again in early November as well.
