Bratina sparks speculation about running for re-election

Bob Bratina is not ruling out a re-election bid to the mayoral seat.

Bob Bratina denies reconsidering a return to the mayoral seat.

Bob Bratina says he's "not a psychic" and doesn't know what he'll be doing, or who he'll be running for, in three months.

Three conflicting statements to three media outlets, all within 24 hours.

On Thursday night, Bratina told CHCH that "you can't rule anything out" when it comes to a re-election run. His "never say never" comments sparked speculation that Bratina might consider trying to keep his current job, and came after his bid to run for the Liberal Hamilton-Centre seat appears to have been stopped before it even started. CHML is reporting that the sitting mayor didn't sell as many memberships as another unnamed candidate for the riding nomination

All of which may have put Bratina's plans for a bigger job in Ottawa on hold.

But on CHML Friday morning, when the question about running again was put to him, Bratina denied that he was reconsidering a run for re-election.

"No, the story is speculation based on a decision made by the Hamilton-Centre Liberal association," said Bratina. "The fact is right now I'm committed to seeking a federal nomination for the Liberal party and that hasn't changed."

After that 9 a.m. interview and before Hamilton council began at 9:30 a.m., he spoke with CBC Hamilton in more vague terms.

"I'm not a psychic. I'm not going to tell you what's going to happen three months or five months or a year from now," Bratina said. "It's not leaving doors open....Nothing has changed."

Whether he's running or not, Bratina's radio interview had some stump-like speech qualities. So too, did his interview with CBC.

Bratina previously said that he would not run for mayor, but boasted that if he did, he could have won. That was in March, when NDP MP David Christopherson was rumoured to have considered running for the mayor's seat.

Today, he took a shot at former mayor and current candidate, Fred Eisenberger.

"When I took over as mayor everything was a mess," Bratina said. "There was no stadium, taxes were a problem."

Reached by phone Friday morning, former mayor Fred Eisenberger, who preceeded Bratina,  said whateve Bratina decides doesn't change his plans.

"It's of no consequence to me," Eisenberger said. "Figuring out what Bob Bratina is going to do is always challenging."

"I was in the race notwithstanding whether Bob was in the race or not."

Will Bob Bratina run again for mayor of Hamilton?
