The director of education of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will retire early next year after a career in education that spans 43 years.
Patricia Amos, who has held the position since July 2009, submitted a formal letter of retirement to the trustees at Tuesday's board meeting.
"My life has been truly enriched by all those whom I have had the privilege to lead and serve in the field of Catholic Education," she said.
Retirement will allow her to spend more time with her growing family, she added.
The board accepted the retirement with mixed feelings, said Chairperson Patrick J. Daly in a release.
"Along with regret, we share a deep sense of gratitude to Mrs. Amos for her outstanding service to our Board and school system over these past 43 years."
Amos was hired by the board in 1972 as an elementary teacher. She went on to become elementary vice-principal, elementary principal, superintendent of education and, most recently, director of education.
During her term as the director of education, the board saw the rollout of full-day kindergarten and the Managing Information for Student Achievement (MISA) initiative, which allows educators to collect and use data to inform decisions and best practices.
Several new schools were also constructed during her term, according to a release.
Her term will end on January 9, 2015.
