A man was rushed to hospital with life threatening injuries after a home invasion and stabbing in the city's east end Friday.

Two men armed with a knife and hammer broke in to a residence in the area of Bell Manor Street and Barton Street just before midnight, police say, and "confronted" the man living there and his friends.

"The suspects proceeded to assault the victim with the knife and the hammer causing serious injuries," a police news release reads.

Police spokesperson Debbie McGreal-Dinning told CBC Hamilton officers are unsure at this point if the people involved knew each other. Nothing was taken from the home, she added.

The 22-year-old victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Once he arrived, his condition was downgraded to non-life threatening.

Hamilton police are still investigating and are asking anyone who might have information to contact police at (905) 546-2956 or Crime Stopper's at 1-800-222-8477.
