The frigid winter is still gripping Hamilton, but Malcolm Ridgway was already planning for summer at the Connect to Careers job fair on Thursday.
The second-year commerce student at McMaster stopped by the Connect to Careers job fair Thursday to search for a summer gig.
He said he is keeping an open mind about opportunities, but he wants to find out more about a potential job's duties, flexibility and hours.
"There's more competition because there are not many jobs around," he said. "But if you are working hard to find one, you'll get one eventually."
But summer jobs weren't the only focus at the job fair, co-hosted by McMaster University, Mohawk College, Redeemer University and Workforce Planning Hamilton. About 140 employers decorated their booths with TV screens, and banners — some of them coming as far as Vancouver and the U.S. for the fair.
In its second year, Connect to Careers is poised to be Hamilton's largest job fair. Thursday's event attracted more than 5,000 people, organizers say.
The large attendance was also partly because the fair opened to the general public for the first time. Previously, only students from hosting schools could attend.
Job seekers weren't the only ones trying to sell themselves. Many companies were also using giveaways to attract talent.
Horizon Utilities, for example, gave away hundreds of energy-efficient light bulbs, said Katrina Zawalicz, the company's human resources data administrator .
"It's our first time at Connect to Careers. We'll be back next year," she said.
A few steps away from Horizon's booth, PNR RailWorks also gave away Post-It notes, USB drives and mouse pads.
Stacey Taylor, who also represented the company at the job fair last year, said including the general public brought in a lot more traffic, but the crowd had mixed expectations and questions.
"Students want to know what skills are required, the general public just wants to know if you are hiring," she said.
