Police and fire officials are investigating four rural barn fires set Sunday and Monday. Hamilton police said Tuesday morning they are investigating the fires as arson.
Hamilton fire crews responded Sunday morning around 9:41 a.m. to a boarded-up, vacant farmhouse on fire at 406 Tapleytown Road in Stoney Creek.
And around 12:30 a.m. Monday, 17 fire units, including six tanker trucks, responded to a barn fire in Glanbrook at 6081 Trimble Road.
A nearby two-car garage, with a car inside, was also on fire when crews arrived, said Hamilton Fire spokesman Claudio Mostacci. The barn was completely destroyed.
In addition, two fires were set on South Chippewa Road road. Firefighters received calls just 11 minutes apart late Sunday night.
Ontario Fire Marshal and Hamilton Police are investigating the fires, Mostacci said.
"There has been a rash of barn fires in the area." Mostacci said.
Hamilton police said Tuesday that on March 15, 2015 witnesses saw a small black pickup truck, possibly a Ford or GMC, in the area and are asking to speak with locals who might have a truck fitting that description. They say they are treating the fires "as related to one another."
Police are asking locals to report any suspicious vehicles or activity right away.
