It takes Lesley Stewart roughly three seconds to see if you have what it takes. And three seconds more to decide if she can work with what you have.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats cheerleader coach isn't shy about how she'll judge the roughly 50 women trying out for the Ticats cheerleading squad Saturday. She's been in the CFL as a cheerleader for more than two decades, since 1993, on top of her broadcasting career with CHCH.
But with 20 women needed for next year's squad, and only one dancer with more than one year of experience, Stewart is faced with a major turnover for the 2015 team.
"Last year we only chose four girls," Stewart joked.
Three by three, the room of 50 audition slowly for Stewart, who said this year's crowd is largely students. The minimum age is 19 "by Nov. 1," Stewart said. Those selected will be working for a "nominal fee" paid for game day work, but everything else — including the six hours a week of rehearsals and promotion events in the city — is volunteer work.
Stewart said there are some perks, including free gear from the team's sponsors, a free trip to the Grey Cup, as well as hair, makeup, tanning and gym memberships, and of course, networking.
"They get to meet a lot of people and doors open for them," Stewart said.
