In 2001, Jacksoul singer Haydain Neale scooped up his first Juno Award and performed in front of his hometown crowd in Hamilton.
Fourteen years later, and more than five years after his death of lung cancer at the age of 39, the R&B singer is nominated again — for the seventh time — and the award will be contested again in Hamilton.
The posthumous "Got to Have It," a previously unreleased tune included on the band's "Greatest Hits," is up against recordings by the Weeknd, Melanie Durrant, JRDN and Ben Stevenson.
Leading up to the show, Neale's former bandmate Ron Lopata talked to The Canadian Press about the continued praise for his late friend.
The Juno for best R&B/soul recording of the year was to be contested Saturday night.

CP: Did you get a sense of how Haydain felt about Hamilton?
Lopata: Haydain was a very positive person, so not many people or places rubbed him the wrong way. I think he was proud of Hamilton -- that's where he grew up.
I think from his childhood upbringing there, there were positive memories and there were negative memories. There were hardships there. But it made him who he was.
CP: This is the second Juno nomination that's arrived posthumously, after Jacksoul won in 2010. Is it bittersweet?
Lopata: Absolutely. Totally bittersweet.
I'll tell you the easy side of it is the fact that Haydain always wanted to spread music, love, peace and prosperity around. He was just proud people listened to the music and that they enjoyed it. So of course, that's the sweet.
The bitter is that he's not here to share with us this recognition, and to share with us being able to play some of these tunes live. But again, I'm sure he's looking down upon us, and there's a smile there.
CP: What can you tell me about "Got to Have It"?
Lopata: That was written seven years ago -- before Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson (made "Uptown Funk!"), he did that seven years ago. He was always a little bit ahead. When I went to the hard drives and listened to that song last year, I thought: "Whoa, he did this in 2007? How ahead of the curve is that?"
I wish it the best of luck, selfishly, but also for my friend Haydain. I know it's a tough category, there are some really talented artists, but selfishly it would be nice to have one last one to hold in memory of my friend Haydain.
