Flamborough gets one new school, not 2 as planned

It's a partially fulfilled wish list for Hamilton's public school board.

It gets one new elementary school in Flamborough, but in the case of the second it had hoped for, it will have to make due with renovations.

The province will fund a new elementary school at the Beverly Central site, Education Minister Liz Sandals said in Troy on Friday. About $7.5 million of the $19 million announced will pay for a Beverly Central school. The board hopes to partner with the city to build that school on city property.

'We're always prepared that we may not get everything we ask for.'- HWDSB chair Todd White

It'll also give the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board money for an addition on Spencer Valley Elementary School. But the board had hoped to close Spencer Valley and partner with the city for a new library, community space and school in Greensville, a school that will now close.

The announcement was only part of what the board asked for. And it sends the board "back to the drawing board" with the city on the Greensville/Spencer Valley issue, said board chair Todd White. But it doesn't kill some hope of a partnership in that area.

"We're always prepared that we may not get everything we ask for," White said. "That's how the game is played."

The board and city have been in talks for months about partnering in Greensville and Beverly Central.

At Beverly Central, the board hopes to build a new school on the same property as the city's community centre. The school will replace the existing Beverly and Dr. John Seaton schools. In Greensville, the city and board have been talking about numerous options, including incorporating a city library branch and community space to replace Spencer Valley and Greensville.

That's still possible for Spencer Valley, White said. It just changes the negotiations a little.

"Whatever the location would be in that area, we still want to continue those discussions," he said.

The Beverly Central discussions are "a bit of a simpler issue," White said. "The city has quite a bit of land there," and "we're hammering out an agreement between staff."

Sandals's announcement included $11.5 million for renovations to Spencer Valley and eight more schools, all of which were impacted by the board's sweeping accommodation reviews of the last two years. The projects must be open to students by 2017/18.

The other projects include additions and renovations to the following:

  • Franklin Road
  • George L. Armstrong
  • Pauline Johnson
  • Queensdale
  • Ridgemount
  • Viscount Montgomery
  • W. H. Ballard
  • Hillcrest

Cardinal Heights, Linden Park, Eastmount Park, Woodward and Roxborough Park are being closed by the board by June 2016.

"Our government is proud to invest in capital projects that are bringing students and communities together, reducing the cost of under-used space, and reinvesting savings back into the classroom," Sandals said.
