One man is in hospital after staff inside a jewelry store he tried to rob resisted and captured him.
A second robber involved in the theft at Eastgate Square fired a gun, and ran away. He is still being sought by police.
The two men went into the store at the Centennial Parkway N mall around 8:30 p.m., police say.
One man had a hammer, and he went behind the counter at Fine Touch Jewelers,and started to take merchandise. That's when a staff member confronted him and a struggle ensued.
The second man, armed with a gun, stayed at the store entrance, police say. He fired the gun and ran out of the mall when his partner was confronted.
Emergency personnel were called to the mall in Hamilton's east end with reports of gunfire and a possible hammer attack.
"The persons inside the jewelry store were the persons who apprehended the suspect," said acting Staff Sgt. Marco Belconty.
That man was later taken to Hamilton General Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries to his head and leg, according to Hamilton paramedics.
It is not clear how the man was injured.
The second suspect remains at large. A large police presence remained in the area Thursday night, searching with help from a canine unit. The first suspect isn't cooperating, police say, and won't tell police his name.
Hamilton police said via Twitter shortly after 10 p.m. there is no sign of any immediate threat to public safety at the mall.
