It's that time of the week again – CBC Hamilton reporter Adam Carter is back with his three picks for new Ontario music that you need to listen to this week.
Adam is on the air each week on CBC Radio for In the Key of C, hosted by Craig Norris. He'll choose three Ontario bands or artists that are releasing new music for your listening pleasure. Here are this week's picks:
Ivory Hours: Hello Honey
First up this week is a new track from London alt-pop band Ivory Hours called Hello Honey.
Now this track isn't complex, but it's a textbook example of how to write tight pop music. It's light, the production is spot on, and the vocal melody is ridiculously catchy.
This thing will get stuck in your head real fast — and check out those dance moves in the video.
Laura Cole and Mike McCurlie: You Can't Toboggan in The Hammer Anymore
This has to be one of the only impassioned protest songs ever written about tobogganing. But when you take away one of the few true joys Canadians have during our monolithic winters, you have to expect some pushback.
Hamilton's Laura Cole started a petition on Change.org last week to protest the city's oppressive tobogganing bylaw, which threatens to slap a $5,000 fine on anyone caught having fun sliding down a hill. Seeing as she's an accomplished songwriter too, she wrote this song to go with it.
It features her signature smokey vocal timbre and ukelele — which definitely makes it the only protest song ever written about tobogganing to feature an instrument most associated with Hawaii and Tiny Tim.
Hollerado: Firefly
This track is part of a massive and ambitious project Hollerado calls A Hundred and Eleven Songs.
After their last record came out, fans could buy a package that included the band writing a custom song about them. Well, they did a hundred and eleven of them. It's not a formula, it's not corporate, it's just a band trying something out — and that's why it's great. You can listen to the first few songs online right now on Hollerado's website.
This tune is called Firefly. While it's upbeat and catchy, it's actually a song guitarist Menno Versteeg wrote for his wife Annie after their condo burned down.
The circumstances suck — but hey, at least they got a great song out of it.
Thanks for listening this week. You can hear Adam during In the Key of C every Saturday evening at 5 p.m. on CBC Radio. In the Key of C can be heard across the province, except for the GTA. Hamilton listeners can hear this segment in the audio player above.
