Hamilton police are joining other police forces across the country in conducting a traffic blitz over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Taking place from Saturday to Monday, the long-weekend traffic initiative focuses on drivers and passengers who are not buckled up. It also addresses high-risk behaviours involving impaired, distracted and aggressive driving.
The holiday traffic blitz is part of Operation Impact, one of the two national traffic safety campaigns aimed at raising public awareness about the danger of risky and often illegal driving behaviours.
This year's Operation Impact focuses on education and enforcement of impaired driving, occupant restraint use and aggressive and distracted driving, the main causes of death and injuries on Canadian roads.
"Many of the injuries and deaths on the roads would not occur if everyone in a vehicle was adequately restrained by safety belts," police said in a release.
Drivers who are not buckled up can face a $240 fine and two demerit points.
In 2013, Hamilton police laid 872 charges of seatbelt violations, down by 331 compared to the previous year. So far in 2014, police have issued 547 provincial offences notices for seatbelt violations.
In 2013, there were also 828 alcohol-related driving offences and 121 car accidents that involved alcohol, according to police.
