Tuesday night the CBC's The National came to visit Hamilton's Devil's Punchbowl waterfall as part of its series taking a look at garbage dumped in wild and beautiful spaces across Canada.
Hamilton's Greg Lenko took the CBC's Havard Gould for a tour of the Devil's Punchbowl. Lenko was a candidate for the Green party in the 2014 Provincial election running in the Hamilton Mountain riding. Every spring Lenko leads a cleanup of several of the city's waterfalls.
You can read more about Havard Gould's trashing Canada series here:
In the series Gould asks how Canadians can value the unspoiled wilderness, yet spoil it daily by illegally dumping junk all over the landscape?
According to Lenko's website, escarpmentproject.ca, his cleanup project is one of the largest of its kind in Canada. Lenko invites helpers to remove litter and debris that has been dumped and left there, in some cases, the site says, for decades.
The site says the last clean-up took place on Apr. 27, 2014 and collected more than 700 bags of litter as well as "furniture, car parts, bikes, shopping carts, computers, TVs and more."
The next cleanup is scheduled for Apr. 26 2015 at 11 a.m..
See the video at the bottom of this page as Lenko calls on the people of the city of Hamilton for help cleaning up local waterfalls in last spring.
