Fred Eisenberger is still the frontrunner to be Hamilton's next mayor, according to the results of a new poll.
A Forum Research poll says Eisenberger has the support of 37 per cent of decided and leaning respondents, with Brad Clark coming in second at 25 per cent and Brian McHattie virtually tied with him at 22 per cent.
The poll was conducted for the Hamilton Spectator on Oct. 17 and was a landline and cellphone survey of 751 respondents. The poll has a margin or error of 3.6 per cent and is considered accurate 19 times out of 20.
"The big change here is that Brian McHattie has caught up with Brad Clark and now shares second place with him," said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff. "With less than 10 days to go, however, it looks like this race is Fred Eisenberger's to lose."
About 1-in-6 of respondents said they would vote for some other candidate at 16 per cent, up from 11 per cent in the last poll. That list includes (in alphabetical order by last name) Michael Baldasaro, Ejaz Butt, Mike Clancy, Warrand Francis, Nick Iamonico, Crystal Lavigne, Michael Pattison, Phil Ryerson, Ricky Tavares.
Nine per cent of respondents also said they were still undecided.
According to the poll, Eisenberger is now known to almost all voters (92 per cent up from 83 percent from a Sept. 26 poll) and has a 59 per cent approval rating, down from a 64 per cent approval rating last month.

Clark is known to 75 per cent of respondents, which is up from 68 per cent in the last poll, and his approval rating is down slightly at 50 per cent from 53 per cent. McHattie's awareness has increased the most, the poll says, going from 57 per cent in the last poll up to 70 per cent.
McHattie's approval rating has risen slightly to 50 per cent from 46 per cent.
Much like Forum's last poll in the city, taxes remain the most important issue for people surveyed at 26 per cent, followed by transit at 16 per cent, economic development at 16 per cent and infrastructure at 14 per cent.
After that, ethics and transparency at city hall come in at 11 per cent, and an issue that's not listed came in at 15 per cent.
According to the poll, transit is the most important issue for both McHattie and Clark supporters. Taxes were the most important issue for people who identified as Eisenberger's supporters in the poll.
Forum cautions that this research is "not necessarily predictive of future outcomes, but rather, captures opinion at one point in time."
