A cell phone theft at the James Street South YMCA led to a stabbing Monday night, say Hamilton police.

A pair of 18-year-olds got into an altercation that spilled into the street at roughly 6 p.m. after a cell phone was stolen, police say. The victim used another phone to call the stolen cell, which rang in the pocket of the other man.

After retrieving his phone, the man walked away. But police say the alleged thief ran after the man, stabbing him in the stomach. He was arrested by an off-duty officer in the area, and charged with aggravated assault, theft and breach of probation.

Hamilton police say he was held in custody while awaiting a bail hearing. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life- threatening injuries.
