The Tiger-Cats do battle on Friday night, freeing up the rest of the weekend for an eclectic mix of important fundraisers, zombie walks and some wonderful music. Oh, and a mayoral debate, too.
Ebola fundraiser
You can do something about the Ebola crisis in West Africa, community organizer Leo Johnson says. That can start with a Saturday morning march and fundraiser that begins at St. Joseph's Hospital (50 Charlton Ave. E.). Special t-shirts will be available for $20.
Johnson, who is originally from Liberia and has family still living there, is hoping to raise $30,000 to supply healthcare workers there with the supplies they need to contain the deadly virus.
If you can't make the morning march, there's also an evening dinner, which you can buy tickets to here.
Zombie Walk
Leave your brains at home and go join the staggering hoards at Hamilton's annual zombie walk.
The event gets going at Gore Park at noon, and walkers follow a route to the Staircase Cafe and Theatre, at 27 Dundurn St. N., for an afterparty.
Walkers are reminded to stay on the sidewalk: "We know the walking dead might find Hamilton's mixture of one-way and two-way streets confusing," the event organizers explain on their website.
And, if you're the type of undead that needs an incentive, there are prizes for the best zombie costume.
Steel City Jazz Festival
The second year of Hamilton's jazz festival is in full swing, or, at least three-quarters time.
There are shows this weekend at Artword Artbar, many featuring fantastic local talent.
For more details, including a full schedule, check out the festival's website.
HiveX conference and mayoral debate
Hamilton HIVE, the young professionals' group focus on city-building, is hosting its annual HiveX conference on Saturday at the Sheraton Hotel downtown.
This conference, focused around the idea of "ambition", features interactive workshops on leadership, branding and business. And, because 'tis the season, there will be a mayoral debate moderated by CBC Hamilton's Sam Craggs.
Tickets are $55 for the daylong conference, or $70 with access to the afterparty.
Dinner Belles CD release
The sublime Dinner Belles are set to officially release their new album The River and the Willow on Saturday night at The Casbah.
The Belles, a seven-piece alt-country group from Hamilton, are known to put on a great (though 19+) show.
Tickets are available here.
