Lynden drinking water advisory for E. coli lifted

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 07 September 2014 | 22.46

The additional drinking water advisory for E. coli issued to residents of Lynden on Wednesday has been lifted, but the previous advisory for intermittent lead remains in effect.

The additional advisory came after a water sample collected as part of routine monitoring of Lynden's drinking water tested positive for E. coli and coliform bacteria.

The medical officer of health for the City of Hamilton has verified the safety of Lynden's water supply on Friday after the city took corrective actions to eliminate the E.coli.

However, before using tap water, Lynden residents are asked to do the following:

  • Discard all water filters that may have come in contact with your water supply on or after September 3, 2014.
  • Discard ice made on or since September 3, 2014.
  • Empty and flush appliances that use water that may be ingested or come into contact with utensils, such as dishwashers, fridges with ice makers and water dispensers, water softeners.
  • Flush hot water tank(s) by attaching a hose to the tap at bottom of the water heater and drain it to floor drain or sink, if possible.
  • Flush all cold and hot water taps for several minutes.
  • Remove and clean all tap aerators/screens after flushing.

Because of the continued advisory for intermittent lead, Lynden residents are also reminded of the following:

  • Boiling your tap water will not remove or reduce lead.
  • Do not use untreated water to:
    • Drink
    • Make meals such as soup, stew, pasta and instant hot cereal.
    • Make ice, juice, coffee, tea, puddings or other mixes, especially infant formula.
  • Unfiltered tap water can be used to:
    • Wash fruits and vegetables, provided they are dried off prior to eating.
    • Wash dishes, provided they are dried off with a clean towel prior to use.
    • Shower and bathe.
    • Wash hands, flush toilets, and laundry.
    • Brush teeth, provided rinse water is not swallowed.

Lynden residents should also consider filtering their tap water with an NSF Standard #53 filter for drinking, or as an ingredient in meals and drinks. These filters should reduce the tap water lead concentrations to acceptable levels when used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Hamilton Water can provide residents with one of these filters for lead removal. If you want to receive one, you can contact Water/Wastewater Customer Service at 905-546-4426.

If you have any health related questions regarding your drinking water, you can call Hamilton's Contact Centre at 905-546-2489.
