Rainfall warning in effect for Hamilton

Environment Canada is issuing a special weather warning for Hamilton and most of southern Ontario, with a warning upwards of 50 mm of rain could fall in some one to two hours.

The warning comes as a slow-moving low pressure system moves across Southern Ontario, bringing heavy rains in small, concentrated bands. Issued at 5:23 a.m., the warning notes that the overnight saw 15 to 20 mm of rain, and warned some areas could see 30, 40 or even 50 mm of rain in a short period of time.

Last week, Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips spoke about the 'new breed' of of storms in southern Ontario. He said climate change has brought about more rain, some 12 per cent more in the last few decades, but it's the intensity that has seen the biggest change.

"It's like these are bulls-eyes," Phillips said last week, speaking in the wake of a Burlington storm that dropped two months of rain in two hours, causing flooding. Despite the torrent of rain in Burlington, the rain was an isolated event with no rain falling in Hamilton and very little in Oakville.

Tuesday's weather warning specifically warns about "significant rainfall amounts of locally 30 or 40 mm are possible in some thunderstorms that track across any one locale for an hour or two," the same small bands that have become the norm for rainstorms in the last decade, Phillips explained last week.

"These [once in] 50-year floods are occurring every 10 years, because our climate has changed," Phillips said.
