Olympic gold-medalist and Hamilton-native Laura Fortino was taken first overall in Tuesday's Canadian Women's Hockey League draft.
The 23-year-old defenceman was scooped up the Brampton Thunder after playing in the NCAA for the past four years with Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y.

While she made an impressive mark there — she left the Big Red on a high note, sixth on their all-time assist list with 98 (in 133 games) and an assistant captain in her senior year — she burst into the spotlight in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.
Fortino went back and forth with Marie-Philip Poulin in overtime against the United States in the gold-medal game. Her fake shot pass to Poulin from the point to the left circle stunned U.S. goalie Jessie Vetter, leaving an open net to seal a come-from-behind victory.
It was Canada's fourth-straight gold medal in women's hockey.
Fortino was a point-per-game player in her college career, scoring 35 goals and amassing 133 points in 133 games.
The former Stoney Creek Sabre will be closer to home in Brampton. The CWHL includes Brampton, the Boston Blades, Montreal Stars, Toronto Furies and Calgary Inferno. The league includes several players from the Canadian and U.S. national squads.
In August, Fortino joined fellow Canadian Olympian, speed skater Denny Morrison, in Ghana with Right to Play, a Toronto-based organization that brings sports and games to more than 20 countries.
The Furies, who were this year's Clarkson Cup champions, chose American defenceman Megan Bozek second overall.
