Hamilton's only Greek festival takes up just a small corner of Inch Park, but the festive music can be heard blocks away.

Hamilton Greek Fest, which takes place Aug. 15-17, coincides with the Greek holiday of Assumption Day. That holiday is usually celebrated with a community feast, according to organizer Angela Mouriopoulos.

"Next to Christmas and Easter, it's Aug. 15, " said Mouriopoulos. "We always get together to celebrate these feast days."

Festival goers sampled Greek food, including gyro wraps, moussaka, Greek fries and, of course, plenty of tzatziki sauce.

The dishes follow authentic recipes and are prepared in the kitchen of the Panagia Greek Orthodox Church next to the park, Mouriopoulos said.

Chilly weather and sporadic rain didn't stop the visitors. The festival attracted more than 1,000 people on its first day, including visitors from Toronto and Niagara, according to Mouriopoulos.

In addition to food and beverage, the festival also features dance performances, vendors, as well as a kid zone with face painting, a bouncy castle and sports competitions.

The festival runs from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday. It takes place at Inch Park at the corner of Brucedale and E 15th Street.
