The city of Hamilton is renaming an arena after hockey great Harry Howell.
Council voted Friday to rename the North Wentworth Twin Pad Arena the "Harry Howell Arena."
It comes at a minimal cost. The city will spend $30,000 on a new sign, to be funded from a city reserve.
In return, it honours a Hamilton great, said councillors, who voted unanimously for the move. Many spoke about the NHL great's mark on Hamilton, his personality and his willingness to play Saturday morning pick-up hockey with Flamborough youth.
"My community is just thrilled and I can't wait for the ceremony," said Coun. Judi Partridge of Ward 15.
Howell, 81, has lived in various spots in Hamilton, including Carlisle and downtown. Howell and his wife plan to attend the naming ceremony, which the city hopes to hold in September.
A former New York Ranger, Howell played more than 1,000 NHL games and repeated all-star games year after year. When he retired in the late 1970s, he coached the Minnesota North Stars, and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
