A faulty valve caused a fire at one of ArcelorMittal Dofasco's blast furnaces Thursday night, fire officials say.

Hamilton firefighters were called to the steel mill around 8:44 p.m. A fire broke out at the top of the number two blast furnace when the valve that controls the gas fuel supply failed.

Dofasco employees were able to shut off the fuel supply to the furnace and then ArcelorMittal fire crews doused the residual flames at the top of the furnace. Hamilton firefighters stayed on scene until the furnace had cooled down enough that everything was deemed safe.

No damage estimates are available yet, fire officials say. No one was injured.
